STUDENTS AND LECTURERS GATHER TO PRAY FOR OLABISI ONABANJO UNIVERSITY

STUDENTS AND LECTURERS GATHER TO PRAY FOR OLABISI ONABANJO UNIVERSITY

As far back as 1982, exactly twenty years ago, Olabisi Onabanjo University used to the best or one of the best universities in Nigeria, it had thousands of students fighting their way in. Responsible government fending for its staff and academic feat that couldn’t be beaten by any other universities around. Our law department and medical school were one of the best in the whole federation.
Sadly, these things seem to have fallen apart, using Chinua Achebe’s words, they seem like folk tales told at moonlight when compared to the present situation of the institution. Our lecture theatres are not conducive for learning, our infrastructures are way too ancient, they look like museum articles and our laboratories are not equipped. Like that isn’t enough, the school fees keep rising at an alarming rate and the voice of the student representative cannot be heard probably because their mouth has been stuffed with money. The government hardly pay the salaries of staff hence incessant strikes and the law and medical school which used to be the best can be placed among the first five in the federation. Little wonder very few pick this university when filling their UTME forms and employers are not recognizing students from this school.
These disheartening situations got to the heart of the true son of the soil-Kunle Ajayi an alumnus of the university and declared that the staff and students concerned should set a day apart to pray for the school for he believes in the potency of God. The 19th of May 2012 was the day Christians and Muslims gathered together to pray for the school and it took place by 9am at every campus the university owns (Permanent site “PS”, Mini Campus, Sagamu, Ikenne, Ayetoro, Ibogun).
The prayer at Mini Campus, Permanent site and other venues went smoothly, it was properly organized with songs of praise, hymns and demon-defeating prayers were rendered by both student and staff representatives.
Speaking with OOU Vanguard, a 300 Level Micro Biology student Ojaniyi Ifedayo said “We all left the hall with smile flourishing on each and everyone’s faces as we all believe our prayers has been answered and I am convinced that Olabisi Onabanjo University has truly had an encounter with God and I am happy to be part of this change and I believe that the university has regained her lost glory
