OOU STRIKE UPDATE

STRIKE UPDATE.. ASUU- “Lectures On Hold”

Due to the on-going industrial dispute between the management and a coalition of Non- Academic Staff of Universities (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has made ASUU OOU to take a worrisome decision to stay off campus and lectures from today (Monday) till normalcy it brought on campus, according to Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) they made this decision due to security reasons.

The day six (Thursday) of the protest was a different ball game, they (striking workers)  paraded the school with a casket, ambulance and placards which made lots of students scared thinking some one was dead, only to find out it was a protest.

It is quite unfortunate that after two months of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Nationwide strike, ASUU OOU has kept lectures on hold. The day eight (Today) of the protest the striking workers continues their peaceful protest, with speakers, music, microphone, some sat under the hot sun which burnt as if it was on a vengeance mission while some were dancing to the music.

Speaking with OOU Vanguard the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) Chairman OOU chapter, Comrade Taiwo Egberongbe said “we have been on this issue for years now, most of this things started since 2008, the problem started when the last council was put in place by the immediate past governor of the state, when they came to this campus they unleashed terror, they sacked over 150 academic staff, 700 non-teaching staff, the news was all over the national papers and now our arrears have been withheld, we have exercised enough patience that is why we have said no going back. Look at other schools developing but OOU is still a child of 30 years old, so we plead with the visitor in person of Governor Ibikunle Amosun to look critically on this issue to rescue OOU from falling”.

Speaking with a final year student of philosophy said “my brother I don tire, which kind life be this self” after two months of Nationwide strike we are experiencing another strike, must one spend five or six years in a four year course, lectures has been on, not until now ASUU decided to stay off lectures, well I wont blame them for their decision, they need to protect their lives. He added that those going for mobilization missed November batch because of ASUU strike and now they will miss March batch if care is not taken, that means it will be till June/July. Please I urge the media and those at the helm of affairs to assist and to do something about this because things are really getting out of hands.

This strike issue is implicating both the student and the staffs of OOU,,, we are tired of this so called strike every year... I don't believe it's funny anymore but it's a kinda irritating and irrational decision that's being taking by our leader here in OOU.... I and my fellow students are pleading nd imploying the state government to take strategic steps on this issue or matter on strike in OOU every year.
Moreover, on the matter of the school board,, we are also imploying the Governor of Ogun state to speadup in making decision as quick as possible..
