OOU PROTEST NEWS…
STUDENTS SAYS NO TO REPETITION OF
CLASS
The Vice
Chancellor had announced in January that students who were unable to pay their
fees for the previous session(s) will have to write letter of reinstatement,
after which they will be reinstated to their previous level. The announcement
caused a 3-day protest in the school, which led to boycotting of lectures. The
final decision reached by the Senate on Tuesday, 12th March 2013 is that
despite all pleas, the students must repeat. This information has led to the
tension in the school being raised even further.
Students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, are currently
protesting their stand on their Vice chancellors declaration concerning the
students yet to complete payment of their Tuition fees.
Students of the institution has however taken this to heart and resulted in
an open protest.Today the 18th of March 2013, students came out in mass to protest. The University gates were locked; no one was allowed
entry out to the school.
While the protest was on, the Dean of Student Affairs assured the protesting
students that the portal would be open in few days to allow students pay the
fees for the previous session. As tension rises what OOUITES wants it for the law
on repetition be also abolished before the protest to cease.
The anti-students policy has eating deep to the
hearts of Students, affecting OOUITES (most especially academically), it has
made so many students to loose concentration,
skipping classes all to rectify the issue. Without considering the fact that
the school fees is high unlike federal institutions, OOU school fees compete
with some private universities, fees ranging from N100, 000 to N400, 000 The worst
of it that students that have written at their final exams and project
will have to come back to 400level.
The protest has led to indefinite closure of the school gate and academic activities have been suspended for a while. The anti-student policy is about to affect over 5000 students of the institution. The Students House of Senate (SHS), the activist group (CDHR) on campus, the Student Union Government (SUG), the Media, religious groups and other bodies will not sit and watch students repeat any class.
The Vice Chancellor is yet to speak on the issue at hand. The protest
continues tomorrow Day Two, Tuesday
March 19th.
