NATION'S UPDATE

                               BOMB BLAST IN CHRIST EMBASSY
 19th February 2012
Fear grips christains in Nigeria as churches are been set ablaze, another bombing incident occured yesterday in Christ Embasy Church SULEJA, Nigeria. A bomb planted by an abandoned car exploded outside a church in the middle of a worship service Sunday near Nigeria’s capital, wounding five people amid a continuing wave of violence by a radical Islamist sect, authorities and witnesses said.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the blast outside the Christ Embassy church in Suleja, a city near the nation’s capital Abuja. However, the area has been targeted in the past by the sect known as Boko Haram — including the Christmas Day car bombing of a Catholic church nearby that killed at least 44 people.

The bomb explosion occured just after 10 a.m. as the church began its service, Pastor Uyi Idugboe told journalists. Security guards at the church had noticed something suspicious by the abandoned car, prompting the pastor to call everyone inside the church before the service began, he said.

The bomb also apparently had been wrapped with a motorcycle chain, which sent metal shrapnel flying everywhere when the explosive detonated, witnesses said. The explosion tore away the engine compartment of the abandoned car and damaged four other vehicles nearby.

One person was seriously injured in the blast and taken to a local hospital, local police spokesman Richard Oguche said. Another four people suffered minor injuries, said Yushau Shuaib, a spokesman for Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency.
Authorities began to put up roadblocks Sunday afternoon to keep onlookers away and traffic snarled around the city.
it was said that Since the begining of this year more than 289 people have died as a result of bomb blast
The sect’s attacks, including those specifically targeting Christians, have widened distrust between the two faiths in Africa’s most populous nation. Nigeria is largely split between a Christian south and a Muslim north, and most of Boko Haram’s previous attacks have taken place in the north.
Bombs have struck Suleja in the past. During Nigeria’s April election, a bomb planted at an election office in the city killed 16 people. Another bomb at a church exploded in July in the city, killing three people.
In nearby Madalla, another town in Niger state, a car bomb exploded outside St. Theresa Catholic Church there, killing at least 44 people. Authorities have blamed all the previous attacks in Suleja on Boko Haram.
Meanwhile, authorities blamed the group for killing two people Saturday in Nigeria’s northeast. There, gunmen shot dead an Islamic cleric and a local politician in separate attacks, police said.
... Church officials has advised worshipers and citizens to be very careful, most especially in this era of bombing..

Tanker explodes in Lagos, several injured, cars burnt

Sunday, February 19, 2012

In Lagos no fewer than five persons were feared dead and over 20 persons sustained various degrees of burns early Saturday when a diesel-laden tanker belonging to Shorelink Services Limited with registration number XB 370 ATN fell and spilled its content at Mile 2 in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The fire incident, which started about midnight destroyed property worth millions of naira. About 36 vehicles belonging to different transporters at the Lagos-Benin Park were completely burnt.
A container office complex of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the public toilet building located within the park were equally razed.

According to an eyewitness, the tanker was coming into Mile 2 from Oshodi en route the bridge and wanted to negotiate a bend when its rear tyres got stuck in a ditch by the road pavement.“When the rear tyres got stuck, the body fell but the head was still standing with the headlights on. Immediately, the driver got down from the vehicle, folded his arms and was watching; probably thinking of what to do before the tanker exploded.

Within few seconds, its content had spread through the entire park with flame and smoke everywhere. People were running helter-skelter for dear life. Five persons died immediately. Over 20 persons were injured. Cars and buses, including the office complex of NURTW and public toilet, were all burnt.“Men of the Lagos State Fire Service came about 2am but then it was late because the damage had been done. The five corpses were taken away and some of the injured persons were also given first aid treatment and taken to hospital,” the eyewitness said.

A man, Andrew Nosa, seen weeping at the motor park, said he lost his bus and other valuable documents he left in the vehicle the previous day before going to see his family members. Recounting his ordeal, he said: “It was just God that saved my life. My own bus, which I drove from Benin City to Lagos yesterday evening, has been burnt to ashes and all those people who lost their lives were those people that slept in their buses.

“This resulted into serious explosion. In the incident three mortality, several injured and 36 cars burnt were recorded. The remains of the victims have been deposited at Isolo General Hospital.” Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Joseph Jayeoba, confirmed the incident but said only three persons died.

DEATHS AS RAINSTORM WRECKS HAVOCK IN LAGOS
... About 200 families rendered homeless

14th February 2012
Over seveteen people died, several others injusred, cars and building been wrecked, trees, electric pole were also uprotted, about 200 families were rendered homeless  as a result of Monday down pour.
Among the dead were 10 children, who drowned at Shibiri Ekunpa area of Ojo when a passenger ferry conveying them to school capsized due to a gust of wind that assailed it. Also, two students of Goodness Comprehensive High School in the area were killed when the storm destroyed their school building.
At Jakande Estate, Oke-Afa in Isolo Local Council, two persons were killed by a tree felled by the rainstorm.
A teacher at St Gregory College, Obalende was reportedly killed by a mast that collapsed on him while four others were injured. Also, around Radio Nigeria, Ikoyi office, several trees were uprooted by the storm, which caused severe damage to some cars parked in the area.
At Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, LCDA, over 100 buildings including Jakande Low Cost Housing Estate Primary School, Oke Afa Junior and Senior Colleges and the Area office of Ejigbo LCDA in Jakande Estate had their roofs blown away by the rainstorm, which lasted for about 15 minutes.
The Third Mainland Bridge was also blocked for most of the morning as street light poles felled by the storm lay on the road, obstructing free flow of traffic. It took the intervention of men of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, to prevent motorists from running into the poles.
At press time, a combined team of the police and LASTMA operatives was seen making efforts to clear the bridge of the debris caused by the storm to make way for free traffic flow.
Reminiscence of the July 10, 2011 rainfall that killed scores of people and destroyed property worth millions of Naira, other local government areas equally hit by yesterday's downpour include Ejigbo, Onipanu, Obalende and Lekki.
The Lagos State Office of Public Defender (OPD) in Surulere billed to be inaugurated by Governor Babatunde Fashola today was not spared by the rainstorm as a section of its roof was ripped open.
Also some Mega BRT bus stops on the ever busy road were destroyed while three Multi-media bill boards pulled down by the storm lay on the road. The situation led to traffic gridlock as traffic officials worked frantically to ease traffic.

The winds from the storm reached about 74 miles (120 kilometers) an hour, the threshold for hurricane wind speeds, said Mary Iso, the Meteorological Manager of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. Further inland, winds reached up to 40 miles (about 65 kilometers) an hour, she said. About two-thirds of an inch (about 1.7 centimeters) of water fell during the storm, which lasted about 15 minutes, Iso said.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency had previously issued warnings about the possibility of a storm coming through as the seasons begin to change in the nation, Iso said. Nigeria remains gripped by Harmattan winds, which carry sand from the Sahara Desert over Africa's most populous nation. The country's rainy season typically begins in several weeks. "Within a transitional period like this, we normally have erratic weather," Iso said.
Another metorologist, Mr. Abayomi Oyegoke, with Nigeria Meterorogical Agency (NIMET), Oshodi, said the rain was not unusual in terms of scale and attributed the destruction to the wind. "The rain was not massive. When measured, it was 18.6 mm. It is not a massive rainfall. It is the wind that caused the destruction."
He said the rain came as a result of a micro scale system that developed over the Delta area, grew and propagated into the West towards Lagos. "In the process of that movement, another cold system developed around the inland of the South West. Because of the one coming from the Delta area, it invigorates and merges and became a massive system. This massive system now caused a downdraft. The downdraft was associated with the strong velocity of wind that led to the maximum wind gust that caused the destruction we witnessed today."
Unaware of what lay ahead of them, 14 school children had boarded the ferry which took them to school as usual. But tragedy struck at about 8 a.m when the ferry, which could not withstand the gust of wind capsized. The rescue team that raced to the scene was able to recover 10 dead bodies while four were brought out alive and they are currently receiving intensive medication in various hospitals.
About 200 families were rendered homeless as their roof tops and ceilings were completely pulled off by the wind which blew for close to an hour in some areas. Several buildings were partly damaged with some fences collapsed. Some vehicles' windscreens were shattered by hard objects which fell on them.
Residents of the area were greeted by a dark cloud which enveloped the atmosphere, followed by the raging wind which blew off their roofs, a situation that caused panic, as some of the residents rushed out of their apartments, for fear of collapse of their buildings.
Some residents in Onipanu, Palmgrove, Fadeyi and other communities along Ikorodu, whose buildings were affected were seen salvaging some of their properties while others lamented the damage done to their belongings by the rainstorm.
The beautification projects of the Lagos State Government were affected at the Iganmu garden as some of the storm uprooted some newly planted trees.
.. Who could then fathom the cause of the Storm?..

Governor Amosun marks his 54th Birthday with kind gestures
                                                  ,,,SETS FREE 7 PRISONERS…
            5th February 2012
The Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun celebrated his 54th visiting the elderly and prisoners at Prisons in Obafemi/Owode Local Government area Abeokuta, he thought it wise to celebrate his birthday visiting the prison instead of throwing a lavishing party

The Governor was accompanied by the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Wemimo Ogunde and other top government officials. He stated that government would provide amenities such as mattresses as well as sink boreholes at Oba Prison. He deplored the situation where inmates who were supposed to have been reformed became more hardened as a result of the un-conducive environment they found themselves. He urged citizens not to stigmatise ex-convicts, but assist them to fully integrate into the society: he added “These people sleep on the floor, which is not good. It is not that they are brought here to be killed; they are here to be corrected. We should effect that correction in what I will call a conducive environment. As a government, we would see what we can do. On a personal level, whatever I think I can do I will do.”

The governor then granted amnesty to seven prisoners. Among them was a 75-year-old Kayode Adeyemi, from Ijebu Ode prison. He commuted to life imprisonment, the death sentences passed on Messrs Rasidi Yisau and Saburi Adebayo. He ordered the release of Ibrahim Yinusa and Olanrewaju John for good conduct. Septuagenarian Adeyemi was in the bracket of prisoners who are 60 years and above, while Monday Iheakpo and Semiu Afolabi belonged to the group of long term prisoners who have served more than 10 years with good records.

Governor Amosun said “My gesture to prisoners was borne out of the fact that I realised the essence of being created to this world by God is to assist others, particularly those that are less privileged and those that found themselves in places like this” The governor charged those freed to continue to be of good conduct as they return to the society. Also with him was his wife, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, she advised the younger people to pay attention to the welfare of the older ones: “Our desire is to fill in the gap of fulfilling the social needs of vulnerable elderly people who are lonely.

President Goodluck Jonathan Spends N2 billion on Advert for Subsidy

A group operated by President Goodluck Jonathan’s key ministers has spent about N2 billion to run newspaper and radio/television advertisements defending the Federal Government’s aborted petrol subsidy withdrawal, Daily Trust investigation has shown.
The Neighbor to Neighbor Initiative (N2N), a political group formed in the run up to the 2011 election to campaign for Jonathan, placed the advertisements and jingles starting immediately after the government announced ending fuel subsidies on New Year’s Day and went for about three weeks.

The Neighbor to Neighbor Initiative was formed by Mrs. Stella Oduah-Ogiemwonyi, now Aviation minister; Mr. Godsay Orubebe, now Minister of Niger Delta; and King Amalate Johnnic, according to records obtained from the Corporate Affairs Commission in Abuja.
It was registered as a non-governmental organisation on April 1, 2011, with Oduah-Ogiemwonyi, Orubebe and Johnnic as trustees.
But there was no evidence directly linking the three to payment of the N2 billion pro-subsidy removal adverts run in newspapers and broadcast stations in the first three weeks of last month.
Press secretary to Orubebe, Ms. Juliet Archibong, declined to comment when contacted. She instead referred our reporter to one Mr Donald, who she said was among people running the affairs of Neigbour to Neigbour.

The first advert by the group in the print media appeared on January 6, taking over the front and back pages of a newspaper just few days before the start of the national strike called by labour.
Soon, the series of adverts took off in almost all the major national dailies, with the exception of three. The adverts were in the forms of wraparound, front page, special pages and inside pages, and they were all colour.
Most of the newspapers run an average of three to five pages of the pro-subsidy removal adverts daily during the period of the protests.
Only there major national dailies were left out in the N2N adverts, namely Daily Trust, The Nation and The Punch.
Findings show that most of the beneficiary newspapers charged between N15 million to N27 million for wraparound (front page, back page, inside front page and inside back page) and from N8million to N15 million for front page only.
During the period, the LEADERSHIP newspaper run about 37 pages of such adverts that included a wraparound, three centre spreads, 10 front pages and 10 special position pages (page 2) between January 9 and 18, and 13 other inside colour pages between 9 and 18, January.
Vanguard newspaper run 23 pages, comprising three wraparound, 11 front pages, a centre spread and nine colour pages.
The Guardian run 21 pages; ThisDay got 17 pages; Sun, 35 pages;  Blueprint, 16 pages; Compass, 20 pages; Daily Independent, 17 pages; Champion, 22 pages; Tribune, 30 pages; and Business Day, 6 pages.
The estimated amount that the newspapers charged for those adverts is about N1 billion.
Weekly news magazines, including News watch, Tell and The News also run the subsidy removal campaign adverts during the period. The magazines also had front page adverts. The magazines got an estimated N150 million.
Apart from in the print media, the pro-subsidy removal adverts were run at an average of 15 slots per day on major national television networks for at least two weeks in January, gulping about N650 million.
Radio networks, including over 30 FM and AM stations across the country also run jingles worth about N120 million.
